And Jehovah said to Samuel, How long wilt thou mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? fill thy horn with oil, and go, I will send thee to Jesse the Bethlehemite; for I have provided me a king among his sons.
2
And Samuel said, How shall I go? if Saul hear [it], he will kill me. And Jehovah said, Take a heifer with thee, and say, I am come to sacrifice to Jehovah.
3
And call Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will tell thee what thou shalt do; and thou shalt anoint unto me him whom I name unto thee.
4
And Samuel did what Jehovah said, and came to Bethlehem. And the elders of the city came trembling to meet him, and said, Dost thou come peaceably?
5
And he said, Peaceably: I am come to sacrifice to Jehovah. Hallow yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice. And he hallowed Jesse and his sons, and called them to the sacrifice.
6
And it came to pass when they were come, that he looked on Eliab, and said, Surely Jehovah's anointed is before him.
7
But Jehovah said to Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have rejected him; for it is not as man seeth; for man looketh upon the outward appearance, but Jehovah looketh upon the heart.
8
Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, Neither has Jehovah chosen this one.
9
Then Jesse made Shammah pass by. And he said, Neither has Jehovah chosen this one.
10
And Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel. And Samuel said to Jesse, Jehovah has not chosen these.
11
And Samuel said to Jesse, Are these all the young men? And he said, There is yet the youngest remaining, and behold, he is feeding the sheep. And Samuel said to Jesse, Send and fetch him; for we will not sit at table till he come hither.
12
And he sent and brought him in. And he was ruddy, and besides of a lovely countenance and beautiful appearance. And Jehovah said, Arise, anoint him; for this is he.
13
And Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren. And the Spirit of Jehovah came upon David from that day forward. And Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.
14
And the Spirit of Jehovah departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from Jehovah troubled him.
15
And Saul's servants said to him, Behold now, an evil spirit fromGod troubles thee.
16
Let our lord now speak; thy servants are before thee: they shall seek out a man, a skilful player on a harp; and it shall come to pass, when the evil spirit fromGod is upon thee, that he shall play with his hand, and thou shalt be well.
17
And Saul said to his servants, Provide me now a man that can play well, and bring him to me.
18
And one of the young men answered and said, Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, who is skilled in playing, and he is a valiant man and a man of war, and skilled in speech, and of good presence, and Jehovah is with him.
19
Then Saul sent messengers to Jesse and said, Send me David thy son, who is with the sheep.
20
And Jesse took an ass with bread, and a flask of wine, and a kid, and sent [them] by David his son to Saul.
21
And David came to Saul, and stood before him; and he loved him greatly; and he became his armour-bearer.
22
And Saul sent to Jesse, saying, Let David, I pray thee, stand before me; for he has found favour in my sight.
23
And it came to pass, when the [evil] spirit fromGod was upon Saul, that David took the harp, and played with his hand; and Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him.

Et ait: Pacificus: ad immolandum Domino veni, sanctificamini, et venite mecum ut immolem. Sanctificavit ergo Isai et filios eius, et vocavit eos ad sacrificium.

Cumque ingressi essent, vidit Eliab, et ait: Num coram Domino est Christus eius?

Et dixit Dominus ad Samuelem: Ne respicias vultum eius, neque altitudinem staturæ eius: quoniam abieci eum, nec iuxta intuitum hominis ego iudico: homo enim videt ea quæ parent, Dominus autem intuetur cor.

Et vocavit Isai Abinadab, et adduxit eum coram Samuele. Qui dixit: Nec hunc elegit Dominus.

Adduxit autem Isai Samma, de quo ait: Etiam hunc non elegit Dominus.

Adduxit itaque Isai septem filios suos coram Samuele: et ait Samuel ad Isai: Non elegit Dominus ex istis.

Dixitque Samuel ad Isai: Numquid iam completi sunt filii? Qui respondit: Adhuc reliquus est parvulus, et pascit oves. Et ait Samuel ad Isai: Mitte, et adduc eum: nec enim discumbemus prius quam huc ille veniat.

Misit ergo, et adduxit eum. Erat autem rufus, et pulcher aspectu, decoraque facie. et ait Dominus: Surge, unge eum, ipse est enim.

Tulit ergo Samuel cornu olei, et unxit eum in medio fratrum eius: et directus est Spiritus Domini a die illa in David, et deinceps: surgensque Samuel abiit in Ramatha.
14
Spiritus autem Domini recessit a Saul et exagitabat eum spiritus nequam, a Domino.
15
Dixeruntque servi Saul ad eum: Ecce spiritus Dei malus exagitat te.
16
Iubeat dominus noster, et servi tui, qui coram te sunt, quærent hominem scientem psallere cithara, ut quando arripuerit te spiritus Domini malus, psallat manu sua, et levius feras.
17
Et ait Saul ad servos suos: Providete ergo mihi aliquem bene psallentem, et adducite eum ad me.
18
Et respondens unus de pueris, ait: Ecce vidi filium Isai Bethlehemitem scientem psallere, et fortissimum robore, et virum bellicosum, et prudentem in verbis, et virum pulchrum: et Dominus est cum eo.

Misit ergo Saul nuncios ad Isai, dicens: Mitte ad me David filium tuum, qui est in pascuis.
20
Tulit itaque Isai asinum plenum panibus, et lagenam vini, et hœdum de capris unum, et misit per manum David filii sui Sauli.

Et venit David ad Saul, et stetit coram eo: at ille dilexit eum nimis, et factus est eius armiger.
22
Misitque Saul ad Isai, dicens: Stet David in conspectu meo: invenit enim gratiam in oculis meis.

Igitur quandocumque spiritus Domini malus arripiebat Saul, David tollebat citharam, et percutiebat manu sua, et refocillabatur Saul, et levius habebat. recedebat enim ab eo spiritus malus.

And Samuel saith, `How do I go? when Saul hath heard, then he hath slain me.' And Jehovah saith, `A heifer of the herd thou dost take in thy hand, and hast said, To sacrifice to Jehovah I have come;

and thou hast called for Jesse in the sacrifice, and I cause thee to know that which thou dost do, and thou hast anointed to Me him of whom I speak unto thee.'

And Samuel doth that which Jehovah hath spoken, and cometh in to Beth-Lehem, and the elders of the city tremble to meet him, and <FI>one<Fi> saith, `Is thy coming peace?'

and he saith, `Peace; to sacrifice to Jehovah I have come, sanctify yourselves, and ye have come in with me to the sacrifice;' and he sanctifieth Jesse and his sons, and calleth them to the sacrifice.

And it cometh to pass, in their coming in, that he seeth Eliab, and saith, `Surely, before Jehovah <FI>is<Fi> His anointed.'

And Jehovah saith unto Samuel, `Look not unto his appearance, and unto the height of his stature, for I have rejected him; for <FI>it is<Fi> not as man seeth--for man looketh at the eyes, and Jehovah looketh at the heart.'

And Jesse calleth unto Abinadab, and causeth him to pass by before Samuel; and he saith, `Also on this Jehovah hath not fixed.'

And Jesse causeth Shammah to pass by, and he saith, `Also on this Jehovah hath not fixed.'
10
And Jesse causeth seven of his sons to pass by before Samuel, and Samuel saith to Jesse, `Jehovah hath not fixed on these.'

And Samuel saith unto Jesse, `Are the young men finished?' and he saith, `Yet hath been left the youngest; and lo, he delighteth himself among the flock;' and Samuel saith unto Jesse, `Send and take him, for we do not turn round till his coming in hither.'

And he sendeth, and bringeth him in, and he <FI>is<Fi> ruddy, with beauty of eyes, and of good appearance; and Jehovah saith, `Rise, anoint him, for this <FI>is<Fi> he.'

And Samuel taketh the horn of oil, and anointeth him in the midst of his brethren, and prosper over David doth the Spirit of Jehovah from that day and onwards; and Samuel riseth and goeth to Ramath.
14
And the Spirit of Jehovah turned aside from Saul, and a spirit of sadness from Jehovah terrified him;
15
and the servants of Saul say unto him, `Lo, we pray thee, a spirit of sadness <FI>from<Fi> God is terrifying thee;
16
let our lord command, we pray thee, thy servants before thee, they seek a skilful man, playing on a harp, and it hath come to pass, in the spirit of sadness <FI>from<Fi> God being upon thee, that he hath played with his hand, and <FI> it is<Fi> well with thee.'
17
And Saul saith unto his servants, `Provide, I pray you, for me a man playing well--then ye have brought <FI>him<Fi> in unto me.'
18
And one of the servants answereth and saith, `Lo, I have seen a son of Jesse the Beth-Lehemite, skilful in playing, and a mighty virtuous man, and a man of battle, and intelligent in word, and a man of form, and Jehovah <FI>is<Fi> with him.'
19
And Saul sendeth messengers unto Jesse, and saith, `Send unto me David thy son, who <FI>is<Fi> with the flock.'
20
And Jesse taketh an ass, <FI>with<Fi> bread, and a bottle of wine, and one kid of the goats, and sendeth by the hand of David his son unto Saul.
21
And David cometh in unto Saul, and standeth before him, and he loveth him greatly; and he is a bearer of his weapons.
22
And Saul sendeth unto Jesse, saying, `Let David, I pray thee, stand before me, for he hath found grace in mine eyes.'
23
And it hath come to pass, in the spirit of <FI>sadness from<Fi> God being on Saul, that David hath taken the harp, and played with his hand, and Saul hath refreshment and gladness, and the spirit of sadness hath turned aside from off him.
